Mr Chesser is a NHS Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the North Bristol NHS Trust. He has recently been awarded honorary clinical lecturer at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Oxford.
At North Bristol he had the honor of being the Specialty director of Trauma for five years till 2009. He works in the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital, and Frenchay Hospital, Bristol and at the Sports and Orthopaedic Clinic (SOC) based at Spire Hospital, one of the premier sports injury and arthritis clinics in the country. He has been appointed to be on the Medical Advisory Committee as the orthopaedic representative at the Spire Hospital in Bristol
Mr Chesser specialises in pelvic, hip and knee surgery and sports injuries. He has a particular interest in hip and pelvic problems and injuries around the knee. He is a recognised national and international expert and has presented and published on a large range of subjects. He is known for his work on the outcome of hip fracture surgery, pelvic and acetabular fracture surgery, locking plate technology, knee injuries and metal on metal total hip replacement.
Mr Chesser is an editor of a major orthopaedic journal, clinical lead for hip and fragility fractures for the South West, and member of the NICE hip fracture Guidelines Development Group. He sits on the Department of Health’s Major Trauma Outcome group. He has set up a research unit at Frenchay Trauma Unit and has been awarded numerous research grants.
Mr Chesser has recently been seen on BBC, ITV and in the major newspapers speaking about improving the care of hip fractures arounf the country.
Mr Chesser has has completed the world famous East African Sarfari Rally in a 1972 Ford Escort racing 4500km across Africa in eight days, finishing top of his class. He is currently training for the 2011 race. He has been an orthopaedic doctor for Formula 1 for the last 17 years treating many of the drivers.
Clinical Experience
Mr Chesser has had a broad training and wide experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery. He underwent basic surgical training in London and Oxford, and specialist training in Bristol. He has been awarded The Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and is therefore privileged to be listed in the General Medical Council Specialist Register.
Mr Chesser has a major interest in sports trauma and is a recognised Instructor in the Advanced Trauma Life Support scheme. He works as a motor racing doctor at the British and Australian Formula One Grand Prix, as well as at UK racing circuits and the Circuit of Ireland Rally. He has performed research on the requirements for medical care at sporting events and instructs on specialist courses teaching doctors from Grand Prix circuits and the Badminton Horse trials.
Mr Chesser undertook a fellowship in Brisbane, Australia where he gained experience in trauma, sports injuries and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery. He was also awarded a sought-after fellowship to visit centres of excellence in the United States to develop skills in pelvic trauma surgery.
Mr Chesser is recognised as an international expert in orthopaedic trauma, lecturing worldwide and setting up instructional courses for other consultants. He has a large teaching commitment locally, nationally and internationally. He collaborates with other centres on major trials. As part of his contribution to orthopaedic trauma he has helped design new technology and techniques to enable imporved outcome for injured patients. He helps run the regional pelvic and acetabular fractures service for the South West of England.

Mr Chesser is involved in the systematic critical analysis of his own and his colleagues' standards of medical care at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol as required by the Department of Health.
Teaching
Mr Chesser works in a teaching hospital and is, therefore, responsible for tutoring medical students, physiotherapists and nursing staff. He has run weekend courses for Osteopaths and lectures on Orthopaedic courses both nationally and internationally. He set up the first UK course on locking plate technology (an advancement in fracture care). He has been an invited speaker around the UK, Europe, USA, Russia, China and Australia. He continues to be invited around the world to lecture.
Medico-legal Experience
Mr Chesser's Medico-Legal Reports are prepared to the guidelines introduced by the Law Society and the British Orthopaedic Association and conform to Lord Woolf's reforms. He has performed over a 3,000 reports and with his interest in trauma he regularly gives tertiary opinions for complex injuries and pelvic fractures. As a practicing orthopaedic and trauma surgeon he admits and treats patients with all types of musculoskeletal trauma including neck and back injuries, upper limb fractures, and lower limb fractures. He has provided specialist reports in negligence and legal cases. Mr Chesser acts equally without bias for plaintiffs and defendants.
