Curriculum Vitae

Mr Tim Chesser is a NHS Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the North Bristol NHS Trust. At North Bristol he has the honor of being the Specialty director of Trauma. He works in the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital, and Frenchay Hospital, Bristol and at the Sports Injury Clinic (SOC), one of the premier sports injury and arthritis clinics in the country. He specialises in pelvic, hip and knee surgery and sports injuries. He has an particular interest in hip and pelvic problems and injuries around the knee. He is a recognised national and international expert and has presented and published on a large range of subjects. He is known for his work on the outcome of hip fracture surgery, pelvic and acetabular fracture surgery, locking plate technology and metal on metal total hip replacement. He has recently completed the world famous East African Safari Rally in a 1972 Ford Escort racing 4500km across Africa in eight days, finishing top of his class.

Affiliations

He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Trauma Society and British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Association, Orthopaedic Trauma Association (International Member) and British Hip Society. He sits on the board of the Osteosynthesis Trauma Care Committee (OTC UK) and the Trauma Orthopaedic Research Collaborative (TORC).

Medico-legal Experience

His Medico-Legal Reports are prepared to the guidelines introduced by the Law Society and the British Orthopaedic Association and conform to Lord Woolf's reforms. He has performed over a 1,000 reports and with his interest in trauma he regularly gives tertiary opinions for complex injuries and pelvic fractures. Mr Chesser acts equally without bias for plaintiffs and defendants.

Research Interests and Publications

 Mr Chesser continues to publish research and articles on current Orthopaedic Practice. He publishes in peer reviewed journals and his research interests include biomaterials, biomechanics of fracture fixation, outcome after injury ,the requirement for medical services at motor racing circuits and metal on metal total hip replacements. He has a large research portfolio and is invited nationally and internationally to present his work. His research portfolio ranges from randomised control trials in hip fracture surgery and injury to biomechanics of new orthopaedic technologies. He sits on the research board of the OTC UK and Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Collaborative (TORC). He has links with the Centre of Biomechanics at the University of Bath. He reviews for medical journals and grant applications.

Clinical Experience

Mr Chesser has had a broad training and wide experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery. He underwent basic surgical training in London and Oxford, and specialist training in Bristol. He has been awarded The Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and is therefore privileged to be listed in the General Medical Council Specialist Register. He has a major interest in sports trauma and is a recognised Instructor in the Advanced Trauma Life Support scheme. He works as a motor racing doctor at the British and Australian Formula One Grand Prix, as well as at UK racing circuits and the Circuit of Ireland Rally. He has performed research on the requirements for medical care at sporting events and instructs on specialist courses teaching doctors from Grand Prix circuits and the Badminton Horse trials.

He undertook a fellowship in Brisbane, Australia where he gained experience in trauma, sports injuries and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery. He was also awarded a sought-after fellowship to visit centres of excellence in the United States to develop skills in pelvic trauma surgery.

Peer Review Audit

Mr Chesser is involved in the systematic critical analysis of his own and his colleagues' standards of medical care at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol as required by the Department of Health.

Teaching

Mr Chesser works in a teaching hospital and is, therefore, responsible for tutoring medical students, physiotherapists and nursing staff. He has run weekend courses for Osteopaths and lectures on Orthopaedic courses both nationally and internationally. He set up the first UK course on locking plate technology (an advancement in fracture care). In the last two years he has been an invited speaker around the UK, Europe, USA, Russia, China and Australia.
